ITINERARY
Monday 19th June
On arrival at Bologna Airport, we are transferred by air-conditioned coach to our hotel in Montecatini Terme…. the ideal central location while in Tuscany. The town, which lies conveniently between the major attractions and near the golf courses we shall be playing, is a well-known spa-town dating back to the 19th century. The many restaurants and coffee-shops are perfect for unwinding both during the day and in the evenings and the view from the piazza of Montecatini Alto is a photographer’s dream.
Tuesday 20th June
After breakfast we transfer to PISA, where we spend the morning exploring the Piazza del Miracoli (the Field of Miracles), widely regarded as one of the most gorgeous squares in Italy. Its most famous attraction is the iconic Leaning Tower, but visitors are equally awed by the Duomo and the Baptistery. Will you climb the tower?
After a chance to explore the sights and the souvenir stalls of PISA, we head for LUCCA, a beautiful historic town where the town centre is entirely enclosed by the old city walls…the only such walls in Italy still accessible. The views from the walls of the surrounding countryside are breath-catching. Lucca exudes a unique atmosphere…modern blending with the ancient and the narrow streets lined with little shops and restaurants are an insight into the history of Tuscany.
Wednesday 21st June
Our first round of golf in Tuscany is at Arnold Palmer’s tour-quality championship layout
Le Pavoniere …. beautiful scenery and widely regarded as the best course in Tuscany….and a Top 5 in Italy. In the shadow of the Tuscan hills, the course is relatively open with several small lakes adding to the challenge of the natural terrain. Tuscan-style brick walls and bridges add to the ambience and the day’s golfing experience will be remembered for a long time!
Thursday 22nd June
Today we head to Chianti, the famous wine region of Tuscany. Lying South of Florence, Chianti offers a landscape straight out of a Renaissance painting…steeply rolling hills terraced with vineyards and olive groves, bustling market towns and hilltop castles. We visit small medieval villages with stone houses, red shutters and geraniums and sunflowers, as well as a Tuscan castle for wine tasting. Lunchtime sees us in Greve, the capital of the region before we head
to San Gimignano which boasts the highest towers in Tuscany and features the world’s best ice cream. As the sun goes down over the Tuscan hills we stop for another wine-tasting session which includes a light supper with local meats, cheeses, olives and breads. A long day which promises to be never forgotten.
Friday 23rd June
Today has been kept free to allow everyone to catch up and end the tour the way they want.
Some options include:
- Book a day trip to Cinque Terra (pronounced: chink a terra)
- Hire a bicycle and go riding in the hills (or maybe just a walk up to ALTO)
- Revisit LUCCA or FLORENCE, just a train journey away
- Book a one-day cooking course
- Play a round of golf at the nearby and picturesque Montecatini GC
- Spend time at a local Spa for pampering and relaxing
- Browse the local shops for wine, olive oil, leather goods, meats
- Take the train to VIAREGGIO and spend the day exploring and enjoying the relaxed
- beach-holiday ambience of the town’s boardwalk
Saturday 24th June
the beautiful Castelfalfi Golf Club, Tuscany’s only 27-hole club. The recent upgrade incorporated the beautiful landscape with modern standards to create a truly memorable golfing experience and CASTELFALFI is now regularly rated as one of the top 5 courses in Italy. The views from the higher parts of the course give one a chance to view Tuscan Hills rolling into the far distance.
Late afternoon, we head for the funicular to Montecatini Alto…the original town in the region and whose central square oozes character with its selection of restaurants and bars. And as the sun sets over the distant Tuscan hills we enjoy another glass of chilled Chianti…a fine way to end a memorable day’s golf and a natural venue for farewell dinners!
Sunday 25th June
Today is an optional outing to the beautiful capital of the Renaissance….Florence. The first half of the day will be guided, with the second half free to explore and enjoy the city on your own. The sights and attractions in Florence are endless, including some of the finest art collections in the world including Michelangelo, da Vinci, Titian, Botticelli and Rembrandt. And that is before the shopping begins. Visits to galleries must be pre-booked on-line. The architecture and the bridges, the narrow alleyways filled with the smell of Italian cuisine, the street markets, the beautiful people. This is a city you will never forget!
Monday 26th June
Today’s golf is at the impressive Poggio dei Medici Golf Club, home to the Italian Women’s Open for many years. Lying in the scenic Mugello Hills (and close to Ferrari’s test track), it is a course with touches of link-style and parkland. The stream running though the course adds to the beauty (and challenge) and the lasting memory is one of memorable scenery and tranquillity.
Tuesday 27th June
At lunchtime we check out of our hotel and transfer to Florence Airport for our flight back home.
Our flight arrives home and it’s time to share our memories of wonderful Tuscany with all those unfortunate folk that were not with us on the tour (and to find a way past customs with all our purchases from the shops of Tuscany).
